Casablanca – Morocco is solidifying its position as a key player in the global mining sector, with a clear vision for sustainability and energy transition. The Kingdom’s mining industry, already a leader in phosphate production, is expanding its reach into other crucial minerals such as cobalt, positioning itself as an essential hub for the green energy revolution.

At the first International Mining Conference (IMC Morocco 2024), held in Marrakech this week, industry leaders, government officials, and experts from around the world gathered to discuss the future of mining in Morocco and its role in supporting global energy transitions. The three-day event, organized by the Federation of Mineral Industries (FDIM) with the support of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, showcased Morocco’s strategic vision for a sustainable and resilient mining sector.

Strategic location and growing expertise

Morocco’s long-standing mining culture, supported by centuries of tradition, is complemented by its strategic geographical location. Situated at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic, Morocco serves as a vital bridge for trade and energy exchanges between continents. The Kingdom boasts a world-class logistics infrastructure and cutting-edge technology, enabling it to manage the full mining value chain—from extraction to value addition.

Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, emphasized the country’s unique combination of resources, regulatory frameworks, and institutional commitment to a low-carbon, sustainable future. “Morocco is not only rich in resources but is also a global center for the sustainable extraction of minerals essential for the energy transition,” she stated during her opening speech at the conference.

A model for sustainable mining practices

The conference underscored Morocco’s determination to develop a mining sector that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility. The Kingdom has placed a strong emphasis on sustainable mining practices, ensuring that the minerals extracted—whether for energy storage, electronic applications, or industrial uses—are part of a green and circular economy.

A key highlight of the discussions was the need for sustainable mineral extraction practices that respect both the environment and local communities. Experts stressed the importance of adopting innovative solutions in areas such as water management, renewable energy integration, and waste recycling. The government’s commitment to these principles has led to Morocco becoming a model for other African nations.

“Through our clear vision, innovative practices, and commitment to sustainability, Morocco is well on its way to becoming a global leader in sustainable mining,” said Mohamed Cherrat, president of the FDIM.

Energy transition as a driver of mining development

One of the central themes at IMC Morocco 2024 was the connection between mining and energy transition. With the global push towards clean energy, Morocco sees its mining sector playing an integral role in the supply of critical minerals for renewable technologies such as electric vehicles, solar panels, and battery storage. Minerals like cobalt, essential for battery production, are abundant in Morocco and its southern regions, yet to be fully explored.

The country’s mining sector is also expected to benefit from Morocco’s stable political climate, its attractive legal framework, and a network of free trade agreements with countries around the world, making it an ideal destination for foreign investment. As the global demand for clean energy resources continues to rise, Morocco is positioning itself to capitalize on its mineral resources to meet this demand while contributing to the global energy transition.

Building partnerships for a resilient future

The conference also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, particularly within Africa, where Morocco’s leadership can drive innovation and collaboration. With initiatives like the Atlantic Initiative, Morocco is fostering partnerships with African countries to create a more resilient and sustainable mining industry across the continent.

“We aim to strengthen the bonds of cooperation between African nations, helping to build an inclusive and future-oriented economy through the sustainable use of our natural resources,” Benali added.

Looking ahead: A global mining hub

As the conference concluded, the commitment to developing a sustainable, innovative, and resilient mining sector in Morocco was evident. With ongoing reforms in the sector, continued investment in human capital, and a focus on environmental sustainability, Morocco is well on its way to becoming a critical player in the global mining industry.

Looking forward, the country plans to enhance its position in the global value chain, offering new opportunities for collaboration, business development, and sustainable investment in mining. Morocco’s ambition to be a global center for mining, particularly for minerals critical to energy transition, is shaping a brighter, greener future for the Kingdom and its partners worldwide.
