Casablanca – The port of Tanger Med has strengthened its position as a leading Mediterranean port, recording significant growth across various sectors in 2024. This milestone is primarily attributed to enhanced infrastructure, efficient management, and the collective efforts of port operators and authorities.

Container handling surpasses 10 Million

In 2024, Tanger Med handled 10,241,392 containers, reflecting an 18.8% increase compared to the previous year. This achievement underscores the strategic importance of the port in international maritime trade. The increase in container traffic is attributed to the trust and commitment of port operators and shipping companies, as well as the continuous efforts to optimize port operations and reduce waiting times.

Substantial growth in cargo and truck traffic

The port also saw a notable increase in truck traffic, processing 516,842 international transport trucks, an 8.1% rise from 2023. This growth was driven by the handling of industrial products, which grew by 6.8%, and agricultural products, which saw an increase of 7.2%. Furthermore, the total cargo handled in 2024 reached 142 million tons, marking a 16.2% increase compared to the previous year.

Passenger services exceed expectations

Tanger Med port facilitated the transit of 3,047,387 passengers in 2024, registering a 13% increase from the previous year. The “Marhaba” (welcome) campaign, a key period for passenger transit, played a significant role in this achievement, ensuring smooth and efficient service during peak travel times.

Vehicle handling operations flourish

In terms of vehicle handling, Tanger Med port managed a total of 600,872 vehicles in 2024, a 4% increase compared to the previous year. This includes 368,843 vehicles exported by the Renault factories in Melloussa and Casablanca’s Somaca, 170,519 vehicles exported by the Stellantis factory in Kenitra, along with 34,100 cars re-exported and 27,410 imported.

Mixed results in bulk goods

The movement of solid bulk goods remained relatively stable in 2024, with a slight growth of 1%, totaling 584,945 tons. However, the traffic of liquid bulk goods experienced a decline, with a total volume of 7,640,524 tons, a 22% decrease compared to 2023. This reduction is mainly due to the diversion of part of the imports to newly established storage facilities in other Moroccan ports.

Significant increase in maritime stopovers

Tanger Med port complex witnessed 17,479 maritime stopovers in 2024, a 3.42% increase compared to the previous year. This included 1,217 mega-ships, each measuring over 290 meters in length, marking a 13.74% increase. The efficient management and reduction in waiting times for docking and maneuvering contributed to this growth.

Strategic enhancements and collaborative efforts

The port’s achievements in 2024 were driven by significant investments in infrastructure and new equipment. The Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA) highlighted the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including port operators, local authorities, and administrative bodies, which collectively ensured the port’s operations kept pace with the evolving global maritime trade landscape.

Tanger Med’s record performance in 2024 reflects the successful strategies implemented to enhance operational efficiency, infrastructure, and service delivery. The port’s continued growth and improvements position it as a key logistics and industrial hub in the Mediterranean region, contributing to Morocco’s economic development and global trade presence.
