Casablanca – Morocco maintains its position as a regional pioneer in renewable energy transformation, according to recent assessments by international organizations. The country secured the 65th spot globally in the 2024 Energy Transition Index, reaffirming its leadership in the Maghreb region, second in Africa, and fifth among Arab nations. This ranking, published by the World Economic Forum, highlights Morocco’s ongoing commitment to advancing its energy sector amidst global uncertainties.
The Energy Transition Index evaluates 120 countries based on criteria such as energy system performance, sustainability, security, and readiness to accelerate energy transition. Despite facing economic volatility and heightened geopolitical tensions, Morocco’s progress in transitioning towards cleaner energy sources has been notable. Initiatives aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing renewable energy integration have positioned Morocco as a regional model.
In recent years, Morocco has made significant strides in enhancing energy efficiency and expanding its renewable energy capacity. The country aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 52% by 2030, marking one of the most ambitious targets in the Arab region. Notably, Morocco has decreased its reliance on fossil fuels, with coal’s share in the energy mix dropping from 82% in 2022 to 79% in the past year.
The Moroccan government’s strategic efforts include halting coal-related projects and prioritizing natural gas as a transitional fuel, aiming to mitigate environmental impacts while preparing for a future hydrogen economy. These measures underscore Morocco’s proactive approach to sustainable development and energy security.
Despite global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, which have impacted energy markets and policy landscapes worldwide, Morocco continues to navigate towards a more sustainable and secure energy future. The country’s resilience in advancing renewable energy initiatives reflects its commitment to achieving long-term energy sustainability and fostering international cooperation in the energy sector.
