Casablanca – Morocco’s orange exports to the United States have soared to unprecedented levels in 2024, marking a significant rebound from the decline witnessed in 2023. According to data from EastFruit, Moroccan orange shipments to the U.S. surpassed 20,000 tons in the first eleven months of the year, setting a new record for the sector.

Unprecedented growth in exports

The latest figures indicate a 3.5-fold increase compared to 2023, demonstrating the resilience and recovery of Morocco’s agricultural sector. This volume also represents a 10% rise over the previous record set in 2022. Export revenues followed suit, reaching a record-breaking approximately $29.6 million by the end of November.

Before 2013, Moroccan orange exports to the U.S. were sporadic and irregular. However, since then, the country has managed to establish a consistent presence in the American market. Notable milestones include shipments exceeding 10,000 tons in 2018 and 2022. In 2024, for the first time, exports doubled these previous records, highlighting Morocco’s growing influence in the sector.

United States: The leading market for Moroccan oranges

In 2024, the United States accounted for over 40% of Morocco’s total orange exports, consolidating its position as the leading destination for Moroccan citrus. This increase comes as a response to heightened American demand and favorable trade conditions.

Despite intense competition from Chile, South Africa, and Mexico, which together supply approximately 85% of the U.S. orange market, Morocco has successfully maintained its fourth-place ranking, securing a 9% share of total U.S. imports.

Strategic export timing and extended season

One of Morocco’s key advantages in the American market is its strategic export window. The country primarily ships oranges between April and July, a period when competition is relatively low. During this time, the export seasons of Chile and South Africa are just beginning, while Mexico’s season is winding down.

A significant development in 2024 was Morocco’s extension of its export season into September and October, allowing the country to capitalize on market gaps and sustain higher sales volumes. This move has further reinforced its foothold in the U.S. market.

Overcoming climate challenges

The remarkable growth in 2024 comes after a particularly difficult year in 2023, when climate change, water shortages, and severe droughts severely impacted Moroccan citrus production. During that year, total orange exports—across all destinations—fell to just 30,000 tons between January and August, compared to 109,000 tons the previous season. The revenue from these exports also dropped significantly, from approximately $71 million in 2022 to $13.7 million in 2023.

Morocco’s position in global orange trade

Morocco remains a key player in global orange production. Within Africa, it is the third-largest producer, following Egypt and South Africa. In the global ranking, Morocco was the 11th largest orange exporter in 2022, but due to the setbacks in 2023, it dropped to 13th place.

Looking ahead: Future prospects for Moroccan citrus

sector experts are optimistic about the future of Moroccan orange exports. Favorable weather conditions, improved irrigation techniques, and strategic market expansions are expected to sustain the country’s growth trajectory in the coming years. However, challenges remain, including the ongoing threat of climate change and the need for sustainable water management.

With record-breaking figures in 2024, Morocco has proven its ability to adapt and thrive in a competitive global market. As the country continues to refine its export strategies, its position in the U.S. and international markets is likely to strengthen further in the coming years.
