Casablanca – Morocco’s red berry sector is set to receive a significant boost following the expansion of investments by UAE-based agribusiness group Elite Agro, which has committed approximately $134 million to strengthen production capacity, support exports, and create new employment opportunities across several agricultural regions of the country.
The latest investment reflects growing international confidence in Morocco’s agricultural sector, particularly in high-value export crops such as blueberries and raspberries. The project forms part of a broader strategy aimed at expanding fruit production while reinforcing Morocco’s role as a major supplier of fresh produce to international markets.
The investment comes as global demand for red berries continues to rise, driven by changing consumer preferences and increasing interest in healthy, nutrient-rich food products. Morocco has emerged as one of the key beneficiaries of this trend, leveraging favorable climate conditions, modern farming techniques, and strategic proximity to European markets.
As part of the expansion, Elite Agro has inaugurated a new agricultural site in the Kenitra region, bringing the number of farms operated by its Moroccan subsidiary to seven. The new facility covers approximately 200 hectares and is dedicated primarily to the cultivation of blueberries and raspberries, two products that have become increasingly important within Morocco’s agricultural export portfolio.
The project incorporates advanced irrigation systems and modern agricultural technologies designed to improve productivity, optimize water use, and enhance operational efficiency. These measures are particularly important as Morocco continues to prioritize sustainable resource management while expanding agricultural output.
According to company figures, total direct investments by the group in Morocco now exceed $129 million, placing it among the notable foreign investors in the country’s agricultural sector. The company reports that its operations have already generated more than 8,000 jobs, contributing to rural economic development and supporting employment in agricultural communities.
The new investment is expected to further strengthen local economies through additional job creation, infrastructure development, and increased commercial activity linked to production, transportation, packaging, and export operations.
Morocco’s red berry industry has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade. Once considered a niche segment of agricultural production, berries have evolved into one of the country’s most dynamic export categories. Producers have expanded cultivation areas significantly in response to strong international demand, particularly from Europe, where Moroccan berries have become increasingly competitive due to quality standards, seasonal advantages, and efficient logistics networks.
The country’s geographic location offers a strategic advantage, allowing exporters to deliver fresh products quickly to major European markets. Combined with investments in cold-chain infrastructure and modern farming practices, this has helped Morocco strengthen its position among leading global suppliers of fresh berries.
Industry analysts note that the sector’s expansion has generated benefits extending beyond export revenues. Red berry production tends to be labor-intensive, creating substantial employment opportunities throughout the agricultural value chain. From cultivation and harvesting to packaging and logistics, the industry supports thousands of jobs, particularly in rural regions where employment opportunities can be limited.
The latest investment is also expected to enhance Morocco’s export capacity at a time when international competition in the fresh produce sector continues to intensify. By increasing production volumes and improving operational efficiency, producers aim to meet growing demand while maintaining quality standards required by international buyers.
In addition to blueberries and raspberries, Elite Agro’s Moroccan operations produce a diverse range of fruits, including pomegranates, pears, apples, peaches, grapes, cherries, citrus fruits, persimmons, and plums. The company manages production sites across several agricultural regions, including Kenitra, Sidi Yahya, Fez, Beni Mellal, Sefrou, Marrakech, and Benslimane.
This diversified approach allows the company to reduce exposure to market fluctuations affecting individual crops while maximizing the use of Morocco’s varied agricultural environments.
Sustainability has become an increasingly important component of agricultural investment strategies, particularly for export-oriented businesses. The company states that its Moroccan operations comply with internationally recognized standards covering food safety, environmental protection, social responsibility, and good agricultural practices. Such certifications have become essential for maintaining access to premium international markets, where retailers and consumers are placing greater emphasis on traceability and sustainable production methods.
The continued expansion of foreign investment in Morocco’s agricultural sector highlights the country’s growing appeal as a regional agricultural hub. Government efforts to modernize farming, improve irrigation infrastructure, and support export-oriented production have helped attract international investors seeking long-term opportunities in high-value agricultural activities.
For Morocco, the development of the red berry sector aligns with broader objectives aimed at increasing agricultural exports, generating foreign currency earnings, and promoting rural development. The sector has become an important contributor to economic activity in several regions and is increasingly viewed as a model for value-added agricultural production.
As international demand for fresh berries continues to grow, investments such as the latest expansion by Elite Agro are expected to reinforce Morocco’s position in global supply chains, strengthen export performance, and support the long-term development of one of the country’s fastest-growing agricultural segments.
