Casablanca – Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has taken a significant step in its fleet modernization strategy with the arrival of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner last week. The aircraft landed at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport, receiving a traditional water salute to mark the occasion. This delivery is part of an ambitious plan to transform the airline’s fleet and enhance its global competitiveness.

The new Dreamliner is the first of several expected deliveries. RAM currently operates five Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and is set to expand its long-haul fleet to 10 by early 2025 with the addition of five Boeing 787-9s. These next-generation aircraft feature advanced technology and fuel efficiency, aligning with RAM’s goals to improve service quality and reduce environmental impact.

A vision for 2030

This delivery is the first tangible milestone in a broader expansion strategy outlined in a program agreement with the Moroccan government in mid-2023. The plan includes quadrupling RAM’s fleet from its current 53 aircraft to 200 by the end of the decade. The airline intends to bolster its long- and medium-haul operations, with the addition of seven Boeing 737 Max planes also in the pipeline for regional and medium-distance routes.

With these new aircraft, RAM plans to introduce direct flights to key international destinations, such as São Paulo, Toronto, and Beijing, further establishing Morocco as a strategic hub linking Africa to the world.

Boosting competitiveness and connectivity

RAM’s modernization efforts reflect its ambition to secure a stronger position in the global aviation market. Its membership in the OneWorld alliance since 2020 has already increased its global visibility, fostering collaborations with international carriers. The expanded fleet will enhance connectivity across Africa, North America, Europe, and Asia, supporting Morocco’s role as a gateway to the continent.

Supporting national growth goals

The fleet expansion aligns with Morocco’s Vision 2030 tourism strategy, which aims to attract 26 million visitors annually. By increasing international routes, RAM will play a critical role in linking global travelers to Morocco’s diverse tourist attractions. Additionally, the modernization project is expected to stimulate the national economy through job creation and increased trade opportunities.

Looking ahead

The arrival of the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner signals the beginning of an exciting transformation for Royal Air Maroc. With more deliveries scheduled in the coming months, the airline is poised to strengthen its position as a leading carrier and a key player in Morocco’s economic and tourism development.
