Casablanca –  The automotive sector in Morocco has emerged as a significant player on the global stage, particularly in terms of exports to the European Union, where it leads among African nations. Morocco’s role as a key automotive exporter is a testament to its strategic initiatives, including attracting foreign investments, implementing anti-corruption measures, and developing robust infrastructure.

In 2023, Morocco achieved  $13.7 billion in car exports, producing over 535,000 vehicles. This marked a substantial growth of 30.2% in exports compared to the previous year, underscoring the sector’s expansion. The country’s automotive exports surpassed those of the phosphate sector, becoming the leading export industry in Morocco.

The Egyptian Center for Strategic Studies and Research has highlighted Morocco’s rapid growth and leadership in the automotive sector, positioning the country as North Africa’s largest car producer. With over 250 suppliers of car parts and various players in car manufacturing, Morocco has established a robust automotive ecosystem.

Morocco’s strategic location bridging Africa and Europe has contributed to its status as the leading car exporter to the EU, with significant sales to France, Spain, Italy, and Germany driving this growth. The country’s automotive industry has also secured its position as the top car exporter in North Africa, second in Africa overall, and third among Arab nations in car sales through 2023.

To support this burgeoning sector, Morocco has expanded its automotive production capacity to 700,000 vehicles, with ambitious plans for further growth. Investments in diversifying automotive-related industrial activities aim to strengthen the supply chain and foster technological advancements.

In 2023, Morocco’s automotive industry demonstrated resilience and growth despite challenges, recording a modest 0.1% increase in vehicle sales. This slight uptick reflects a steady trajectory following the remarkable 30% growth witnessed in 2021.
