Casablanca – The OCP Group, a global leader in phosphate-based solutions, and Maersk, one of the world’s largest integrated logistics companies, have signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening their strategic collaboration in the field of green and resilient logistics. This partnership, led by OCP’s Specialty Products & Solutions (SPS) Business Unit, focuses on building a future-proof supply chain that aligns with global sustainability goals and addresses the growing complexities of international logistics.
According to a joint statement, the agreement reflects a shared vision between the two companies to create logistics solutions that are not only more efficient and digitally enabled but also more environmentally responsible. With the rising importance of sustainable development in industrial operations, both OCP and Maersk are taking a proactive approach by aligning their operations with the imperatives of decarbonization and long-term resilience.
At the core of this partnership is the ambition to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of logistics operations. This includes optimizing transport routes, integrating advanced digital technologies to streamline supply chain processes, and deploying cleaner energy alternatives. The companies also reaffirmed their joint commitment to reaching carbon neutrality by 2040, with a particular focus on adopting low-emission fuels and improving energy efficiency throughout their logistics networks.
Anass Hassainate, Director of Supply Chain & Logistics at the SPS Business Unit, emphasized the strategic nature of the agreement, describing it as a cornerstone in the development of a world-class supply chain that can withstand the uncertainties of a rapidly evolving global landscape. “Resilience, efficiency, and sustainability are no longer optional in today’s supply chains — they are essential,” he said. “This partnership with Maersk enables us to advance in all three dimensions.”
The partnership also has an academic and human capital development component. In collaboration with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), OCP and Maersk plan to launch joint academic initiatives aimed at building the logistics skills of the next generation. This move reflects a long-term investment in capacity building in Morocco, ensuring that the country’s logistics workforce is equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to thrive in a greener economy.
For Maersk, this agreement is part of a broader strategy to deepen its presence in North Africa while supporting partners in achieving their sustainability goals. Emilio De La Cruz, Managing Director of Maersk for Southwest Europe and the Maghreb, noted the importance of innovation in shaping the logistics of tomorrow. “We are excited to collaborate with OCP in this ambitious journey,” he said. “Together, we aim to demonstrate that supply chains can be both robust and environmentally responsible.”
This initiative complements OCP’s wider green transformation strategy. Between 2023 and 2027, the group plans to invest approximately $13 billion to expand fertilizer production capacity, shift to 100% renewable energy by 2027, and become fully water self-sufficient through desalination and the use of non-conventional water sources — a goal already achieved in 2025. The SPS unit, established in 2022, plays a central role in this transformation by converting phosphate into high-value specialty products used in industries such as food security, clean energy, and electric mobility.
As the world navigates the twin challenges of climate change and supply chain volatility, partnerships like the one between OCP and Maersk offer a blueprint for aligning industrial ambition with environmental responsibility. The integration of green logistics, digitalization, and talent development illustrates a comprehensive approach to modern supply chain management — one that could shape the future of sustainable trade and transport in the region and beyond.
