Casablanca – Younes Sekkouri, the Minister of Economic Integration, Small Business, Employment, and Skills, announced that the government is evaluating the legal framework for delivery workers who partner with companies to transport goods to customers.
During the oral question session in the House of Representatives, Sekkouri stated that once the draft strike law is finalized and the labor code is initiated, the government will address the issue within the labor code framework. He highlighted that significant progress is expected in the coming months to balance this sector.
The minister pointed out that a considerable portion of young people are employed in this sector. He emphasized that discussions have been held with company directors operating in this field in Morocco to address the issue with his ministry.
Sekkouri noted that the relationship between the young workers and the delivery companies using smart applications is currently governed by Article 230 of the Law of Obligations and Contracts, as well as Article 18 of the Labor Code.
He acknowledged that these young workers lack legal, health, and insurance coverage despite working with motorcycles. Sekkouri stressed the need to give importance to these individuals as they often come from marginalized backgrounds.
Highlighting the growing demand for smart application platforms, the minister pointed out their global financial significance. For instance, the United States generates approximately $125 billion from such platforms annually. He emphasized that Morocco, which ranks fifth in this field in Africa, aims to be a leader in services and tourism, aspiring not to lag behind countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt.
The increasing demand for delivery services via smart applications underscores the need for a comprehensive legal framework to protect workers’ rights and ensure their safety. The government’s initiative aims to provide better legal and social coverage for these workers, reflecting the importance of adapting to new economic realities while promoting Morocco’s position in the global market.
