Casablanca – Morocco has taken a major step toward strengthening its industrial capacity and digital infrastructure with the inauguration of a new fiber optic cable manufacturing plant in Berrechid. The facility, developed by Moroccan company FBR CABLES, represents an investment of approximately $20.6 million and is expected to significantly increase domestic production while reinforcing the country’s position as a regional export hub for telecommunications equipment.

The project reflects Morocco’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on imports, strengthen technological sovereignty, and support the rapid expansion of high-speed digital connectivity nationwide.

Major industrial investment to support national demand

The new industrial site spans approximately 15,000 square meters and integrates the company’s production, technical, and operational activities. With this facility, FBR CABLES has increased its annual production capacity to 70,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables, in addition to approximately 30,000 kilometers of advanced network cables, including categories 6, 7, and 8.

This output enables the company to meet close to 60% of Morocco’s national demand, which is estimated at between 120,000 and 130,000 kilometers annually. The increased production capacity effectively doubles Morocco’s domestic output of fiber optic cables, marking a significant shift in the country’s ability to produce critical telecommunications components locally.

The facility is considered one of the most advanced and largest fiber optic cable manufacturing plants in Africa, reinforcing Morocco’s growing industrial leadership in telecommunications infrastructure.

Reducing import dependence and strengthening industrial autonomy

Historically, Morocco relied heavily on imported fiber optic components to support its telecommunications infrastructure. The launch of this new production facility represents a strategic move toward reducing that dependence by localizing the manufacturing of high-value telecommunications equipment.

The plant is fully financed and operated using Moroccan capital and expertise, highlighting the country’s progress in developing advanced industrial capabilities. By strengthening domestic production, Morocco improves its supply chain resilience and enhances its technological independence in a sector critical to economic growth and digital transformation.

This development aligns with Morocco’s national industrial strategy, which prioritizes local manufacturing, technology transfer, and the development of high-value industries capable of serving both domestic and export markets.

Supporting the expansion of digital infrastructure

Fiber optic cables are essential to modern telecommunications networks, enabling high-speed internet access, cloud services, and digital communication systems. Their deployment is critical to supporting the expansion of broadband services, including fiber-to-the-home connections, 4G and 5G networks, and enterprise connectivity.

Morocco’s telecommunications sector has experienced strong growth in recent years, driven by increasing demand for reliable and high-speed internet services. The availability of locally produced fiber optic cables is expected to accelerate infrastructure deployment, improve connectivity quality, and support the digital transformation of businesses, public services, and households.

By strengthening the domestic supply of these essential components, the new factory contributes directly to modernizing Morocco’s digital infrastructure and supporting long-term economic development.

Job creation and economic impact

In addition to its technological benefits, the project delivers important economic and social contributions. The factory has created 165 direct jobs, strengthening employment opportunities in the region and supporting industrial development.

The company currently employs more than 120 people directly and supports over 500 indirect jobs through its network of suppliers, contractors, and local partners. This broader industrial ecosystem contributes to economic activity across multiple sectors, including logistics, materials supply, and technical services.

FBR CABLES is also investing in workforce development through training programs and technology transfer initiatives aimed at strengthening Moroccan technical expertise. These efforts support the development of a skilled workforce capable of sustaining the country’s growing telecommunications and technology sectors.

Export ambitions and regional expansion

Beyond serving the domestic market, the company is pursuing an export strategy focused on African markets, particularly in West Africa. FBR CABLES already exports telecommunications cables to several countries, including Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Gabon.

Morocco’s geographic position, combined with its growing industrial capacity, makes it well positioned to serve as a regional manufacturing hub for telecommunications infrastructure. The Berrechid facility strengthens the country’s ability to supply high-quality fiber optic cables to rapidly growing African markets, where demand for digital infrastructure continues to rise.

The company plans further expansion in the coming years, with the objective of increasing production capacity to 140,000 kilometers annually by 2027. This expansion would enable Morocco to fully meet domestic demand and significantly increase export volumes.

In addition, the company is exploring the possibility of producing optical glass fiber locally, which would allow Morocco to control the entire production chain—from raw materials to finished telecommunications products. This would represent a major step toward full technological autonomy.

Strategic role in Morocco’s digital and industrial future

Founded in 1991, FBR CABLES has developed extensive expertise in manufacturing telecommunications cables for various applications, including outdoor installations, aerial deployment, micro-cables, and fiber-to-the-home systems. The company supplies major telecommunications operators in Morocco, supporting the expansion of high-speed connectivity nationwide.

The inauguration of the Berrechid facility marks a significant milestone in Morocco’s transition toward advanced industrial manufacturing and digital infrastructure development. By combining Moroccan capital, technical expertise, and modern manufacturing technologies, the project strengthens the country’s industrial base and enhances its technological competitiveness.

The new fiber optic cable plant represents a strategic investment in Morocco’s digital future. It strengthens domestic production capacity, reduces reliance on imports, supports job creation, and positions Morocco as a leading telecommunications manufacturing hub in Africa. As demand for digital connectivity continues to grow, the facility will play a key role in supporting Morocco’s economic development and technological transformation.
