Casablanca – SOMACA, the renowned Moroccan automotive plant, officially launched the production of the Renault Kardian, marking a significant step in the country’s role as a key player in the global automotive industry. The event, which took place at SOMACA’s facilities in Casablanca, was attended by key figures, including Ryad Mezzour, Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, as well as executives from Renault Group.
This latest addition to Renault’s lineup is part of the French automaker’s broader international strategy, known as the “Renault International Game Plan 2027,” announced in 2023. The Renault Kardian, a compact urban SUV, is set to serve both the domestic market and more than 15 countries across the globe, including nations in the Gulf, Africa, Ukraine, and the Caribbean.
A key pillar in Renault’s international strategy
The production of the Renault Kardian at SOMACA is not just a milestone for the plant but also for Morocco’s industrial sector. The country is now the second-largest production hub for Renault globally, assembling around 17% of the brand’s total worldwide sales. With the Kardian’s launch, SOMACA aims to boost its production capacity to 500,000 vehicles annually by 2025, up from its current output of 125,000 units.
Minister Ryad Mezzour emphasized the strategic importance of this move, saying, “The Renault Kardian’s production here in Morocco reinforces the Kingdom’s position as a major industrial base for Renault and a key export platform. It highlights the country’s manufacturing competitiveness, which plays a crucial role in the brand’s international expansion.”
A versatile and innovative SUV
The Renault Kardian, developed on the new CMF-RMB platform, is a B-segment compact SUV designed for urban mobility. The model stands out for its versatility, featuring a flexible interior that allows for the development of various configurations for markets outside Europe. The vehicle also introduces Renault’s new “Bi-Ton” paint technology, which applies two distinct colors to the body and roof, a first for Renault plants in Morocco. This innovation enhances the visual appeal of the Kardian while demonstrating SOMACA’s advanced technological capabilities.
Renault’s compact SUV is equipped with a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine delivering 125 horsepower, coupled with a 6-speed EDC dual-clutch transmission. The Kardian is designed for performance and efficiency, providing an advanced driving experience. It also boasts a range of technological features, including a 7-inch digital display, an 8-inch infotainment system supporting Android and iOS, wireless charging, keyless entry, and advanced driver-assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and six airbags.
A boost for Morocco’s automotive industry
SOMACA, established in 1959, has long been a cornerstone of Morocco’s automotive sector. Over the years, the plant has adapted and evolved, producing iconic models such as the Renault 4 and Renault 12. With the production of the Renault Kardian, SOMACA continues to contribute to Morocco’s growing role as an automotive powerhouse, strengthening the country’s reputation as a hub for industrial innovation.
The Kardian is just one of eight models produced by Renault in Morocco, showcasing the Kingdom’s ability to manufacture vehicles for international markets. The Renault Group is also investing in its local workforce, with 6,000 hours of training provided to SOMACA’s engineers and production teams to equip them with the skills needed for the latest manufacturing processes.
Looking ahead
The Renault Kardian is expected to hit the Moroccan market in December 2024, with the vehicle already slated for export to a wide array of markets worldwide. As the plant ramps up production, the project is set to drive further growth in Morocco’s automotive sector, contributing to the government’s goal of achieving 500,000 vehicles produced annually by 2025.
Renault’s continued commitment to Morocco is a testament to the country’s importance in the company’s global strategy and highlights the success of the partnership between Morocco and the French automotive giant. As the production of the Renault Kardian begins, Morocco cements its position as a leading player in the global automotive industry.
