Casablanca – During the recently concluded 10th World Water Forum held in Bali, Indonesia, Morocco’s active participation garnered significant attention and acclaim on the international stage. Led by Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, Morocco showcased its exemplary initiatives and achievements in water resource management, earning commendations from various quarters.
One of the highlights of Morocco’s participation was the prestigious awarding of the Hassan II Great World Water Prize to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations during the forum’s opening ceremony. This accolade symbolized global recognition of Morocco’s outstanding model in water management, a legacy initiated by the late King Hassan II and diligently continued and enhanced under the leadership of the King Mohammed VI.
In addition to receiving accolades, Morocco actively engaged in bilateral discussions and collaborations with international organizations and representatives from other nations. Minister Nizar Baraka held fruitful discussions with key stakeholders, including the FAO and the African Ministers’ Council on Water, as well as representatives from countries such as Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Egypt, Spain, China, Hungary, and Finland.
These interactions culminated in the signing of a significant cooperation protocol between Morocco and Ivory Coast in the field of water resources. Furthermore, Morocco’s commitment to international water governance was underscored by its presidency of the International Network of Basin Organizations, leading to the signing of several international agreements related to basin twinning.
The Moroccan pavilion at the forum served as a focal point for discussions on various topics, including water desalination, groundwater management, and integrated water resource governance. Through informative presentations and documentary screenings, Morocco showcased its dynamic approach to water management, drawing admiration and interest from forum attendees.
Minister Baraka emphasized the importance of Morocco’s participation in elevating its profile as a leading nation in water resource management. He reiterated Morocco’s dedication to collective action for the benefit of water, highlighting the interconnectedness between water, renewable energy, food security, and the environment.
