Casablanca – During the first five months of 2024, the tourism sector in Morocco has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth, despite global challenges. According to the latest report from the National Moroccan Tourism Office (ONMT), nearly 6 million tourists visited the country by the end of May, marking a robust 15% increase compared to the same period last year and a 38% rise from 2019, a pivotal pre-pandemic year.

The performance metrics extend beyond mere visitor numbers. Morocco also recorded 10.44 million overnight stays by the end of May, reflecting an 8% increase over 2023. Concurrently, travel revenues surged to $3.28 billion in the first four months of the year, matching 2023 levels and showing a substantial 39% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

The positive momentum is attributed to strategic initiatives and robust planning outlined in the ONMT’s ambitious “Light in Action” plan, launched in 2023 to revitalize the tourism sector. This comprehensive strategy focuses on enhancing marketing efforts, embracing digital transformation, expanding aviation capacities, and aggressively targeting new markets worldwide.

“Despite challenges such as the Al Haouz earthquake and global uncertainties, Morocco’s tourism sector has not only rebounded but surpassed expectations,” commented Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Crafts, Social Economy, and Solidarity, at a recent ONMT board meeting. The meeting highlighted the sector’s exceptional performance in 2023 and the ongoing success in 2024, underlining Morocco’s position as a resilient and attractive destination.

Throughout the first half of 2024, ONMT intensified its promotional campaigns, leveraging partnerships with international media and launching innovative digital content like “Visit Morocco Originals” videos. The strategy aims to amplify Morocco’s appeal across key markets, reinforcing its global visibility and engagement.

In terms of aviation, ONMT expanded contractual capacities by 40% during the first half of 2024, facilitating new air routes to bolster connectivity between Morocco and major global hubs. This initiative aims to sustainably increase visitor accessibility and streamline travel logistics.

Morocco’s presence at major international tourism fairs, including receiving accolades for its innovative exhibition stands at Fitur 2024 in Madrid and the Holiday Fair in Brussels, further underscores its proactive approach to global market engagement.

Looking ahead, the ONMT is poised to continue its strategic initiatives throughout the remainder of 2024. Plans include further enhancements in digital marketing, collaboration with influencers, and the launch of new projects to enhance visitor experiences and sustain tourism growth.

With a steadfast commitment to innovation and sustainability, Morocco’s tourism sector is set to build on its early 2024 successes, reinforcing its status as a leading destination for global travelers seeking unique cultural experiences and scenic landscapes.
