Casablanca – Morocco’s fishing sector continues to be a vital component of the nation’s economy, demonstrating strength and adaptability in response to market fluctuations. Recent reports from the National Fisheries Office (ONP) highlight key trends within the coastal and artisanal fishing segment. Despite a 14% decrease in landed volumes compared to the previous year, the sector’s total product value increased by 2%, reaching nearly 3 billion dirhams (approximately $309.27 million) in the first quarter of 2024.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki, highlighted that Morocco’s fish exports surged to approximately 29.2 billion dirhams in 2023 (approximately $3 billion), marking a 4% increase compared to 2022. Despite an 8% decline in export volume, the sector’s resilience was evident.

During a press interview, Minister Sadiki underscored the sector’s role in job creation, citing approximately 250,000 direct jobs in 2022. Employment in the marine fishing industries experienced notable growth, with job opportunities surpassing 120,000 in 2022, compared to less than 67,000 in 2010.

This surge in employment is attributed to increased investments in the marine fishing industries sector. Investments surged from 248 million dirhams in 2010 to 739 million dirhams in 2022 (approximately from $29.27 to $76.18 million), reflecting a 94% increase in investment rate from 2000-2010 to 2011-2022, bolstering job creation and economic stability.

Geographically, both Mediterranean and Atlantic coast ports faced challenges, with declines in landings. However, both regions witnessed slight increases in the value of landings, indicating the industry’s ability to maintain value amidst volume fluctuations.

Morocco’s fishing industry’s adaptability extends beyond fishing activities to processing and exporting seafood products. The canning industry, known for its quality products, continues to thrive, with significant exports to European markets. Additionally, innovations in value-added products reflect Morocco’s commitment to meeting evolving consumer preferences and expanding market opportunities.

Looking ahead, Morocco’s fishing industry holds promise for growth and sustainability. Ongoing projects, such as shrimp farms under the Halieutis strategy, aim to enhance competitiveness and contribute further to the national economy. Efforts to ensure the sustainability of marine resources and investments in technology and infrastructure will support the industry’s continued growth trajectory.
