Casablanca – In 2023, Morocco took another substantial step forward in its energy journey, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and energy independence. With domestic electricity production reaching 42.38 terawatt-hours (TWh), the country is steadily building a more self-sufficient and greener energy future.

A growing demand, met locally

Electricity demand in Morocco rose by 4% in 2023 to 43.95 TWh, and an impressive 96% of that demand was covered by local production. This achievement highlights the success of Morocco’s long-term strategy to reduce dependence on energy imports while meeting the needs of its population and industries.

Shifting toward renewables

Renewable energy is at the heart of Morocco’s energy strategy, and 2023 was no exception. The country produced 9,189 gigawatt-hours (GWh) from renewable sources, accounting for 21.7% of its total electricity production. This represents a 22.7% increase compared to the previous year.

Key highlights in renewable energy:

  • Wind power: Morocco’s wind energy capacity surged to 2,017 megawatts (MW) in 2023, a remarkable 30% growth from 2022. Wind energy alone contributed significantly to the renewable mix.
  • Solar energy: Solar power is also shining brighter, with 831 MW of installed capacity generating 2,148 GWh, a 48.15% increase over the previous year.
  • Hydropower: While hydroelectric production has faced challenges due to declining water resources, Morocco is bolstering its capacity with innovative pumped storage projects.

A balanced transition

While renewables are gaining ground, fossil fuels, particularly coal, still dominate Morocco’s energy mix, accounting for 64% of the electricity produced in 2023. However, the country is gradually reducing its reliance on coal, with its use dropping by 6.6% this year.

Notably, Morocco has ramped up its use of natural gas, which now represents 10% of electricity production—its highest share in four years. This shift is driven by Morocco’s entry into the international natural gas market in 2022.

Investments and vision

Since 2009, Morocco has been on a mission to achieve energy independence and fulfill its climate commitments. Major investments in wind, solar, and emerging green technologies, such as hydrogen production, demonstrate the country’s ambition to become a global leader in sustainable energy.

In addition to renewable energy projects, Morocco is enhancing its regional integration by increasing electricity exchanges with neighboring countries. In 2023, energy transfers with Spain amounted to 1,839 GWh, representing 4.2% of Morocco’s total electricity consumption.

Challenges and the road ahead

Despite its achievements, Morocco faces challenges, such as declining hydropower output due to water scarcity and the continued dominance of fossil fuels. Yet, with projects like the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex and innovative initiatives in green hydrogen and desalination powered by renewables, Morocco is positioning itself as a model for sustainable development in the region.

As the country heads into 2025, it remains committed to balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, setting the stage for a brighter and cleaner energy future.
