Casablanca – Morocco’s electricity sector continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and steady growth, as highlighted by recent reports from the Directorate of Financial Studies and Forecasts (DEPF). In 2023, the country witnessed a significant uptick in electricity production, marking a 2.4% increase compared to the previous year. This positive trend not only reflects Morocco’s commitment to enhancing its energy infrastructure but also signifies its proactive approach towards promoting renewable energy sources, aligning with global sustainability goals.

The surge in electricity production, according to the DEPF’s analysis, was propelled by a confluence of factors. Private production exhibited commendable growth, expanding by 5.3%, while renewable energy production, bolstered by legislation such as Law No. 09-13, witnessed a substantial increase of 18.3%. However, this upward trajectory was partially mitigated by a slight decline in production from the National Office of Water and Electricity (ONEE) by 9.4%.

The expansion of electricity production was complemented by an increase in consumption, which rose by 2.7% by the end of 2023. This upsurge in demand was primarily attributed to bolstered sales across different voltage categories, including “very high, high, and medium tension,” which experienced a notable 3.2% increase. Additionally, sales directed towards distributors and households recorded respective increases of 2.8% and 1.8%, underscoring the growing nationwide demand for electricity.

Simultaneously, Morocco has been actively engaged in managing its energy trade with foreign partners. While the volume of imported energy surged by 23.8% in 2023, indicating a reliance on external sources to meet domestic demand, concerted efforts are underway to bolster domestic production and reduce dependency on imports. Similarly, exports witnessed a modest decline of 1.9%, showcasing the country’s commitment to balancing its energy trade dynamics.

Furthermore, the DEPF’s analysis reveals a notable increase in net energy, underscoring Morocco’s strides towards achieving energy efficiency and sustainability objectives. This positive development, coupled with ongoing initiatives to diversify energy sources and improve infrastructure, positions Morocco as a promising player in the global energy landscape.

Looking ahead, Morocco remains committed to advancing its electricity sector through strategic investments, policy reforms, and sustainable practices. By fostering innovation and collaboration, the nation aims to ensure reliable access to electricity, drive economic growth, and contribute to a greener, more resilient future for its citizens and the planet. With a comprehensive approach to energy development, Morocco stands poised to navigate challenges and seize opportunities in the evolving energy landscape.
