Casablanca – Morocco is making significant strides in its preparations to host major sporting events, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025 and the World Cup in 2030. According to the 2025 finance bill, the Moroccan government has allocated nearly $309 million in 2023 to enhance the country’s infrastructure to meet FIFA’s international standards, ensuring the success of these prestigious competitions.
The budget is being managed through the National Fund for Sports Development, which dedicated $206 million for the modernization and rehabilitation of key sports facilities. The Ministry of National Education, Preschool Education, and Sports has already initiated various projects to upgrade these infrastructures as part of its commitment to hosting high-profile events.
Between 2021 and 2023, expenditures from the National Fund for Sports Development increased by an average of 60.31% annually, while the resources available for sports development rose by 48.66%. This financial boost reflects Morocco’s proactive approach to becoming a prime destination for international sporting events.
In 2023 alone, Morocco successfully hosted several continental and international events, including the Club World Cup, the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, and the African Football Confederation Awards ceremony, with a budget of approximately $38.3 million allocated for these activities.
With its bid to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, Morocco is set to elevate its profile even further in the world of sports. The country aims to solidify its reputation as a favored location for major competitions, leveraging its high-quality infrastructure and technical expertise, backed by funding and support from relevant government ministries.
Additionally, Morocco has allocated $53 million in 2023 to support sports federations and associations, ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive. These grants are vital for the operational activities of these organizations, which play a key role in the country’s sports ecosystem.
To further enhance local sports infrastructure, Morocco is implementing a project to build 800 community sports fields, addressing the need for equipment in remote areas. By the end of December 2023, the program was expanded to include the construction of around 1,855 fields across various municipalities through partnerships with local authorities.
With these comprehensive efforts, Morocco is not only preparing for upcoming events but is also investing in the long-term development of its sports landscape, aiming to create a lasting legacy for future generations.
