Casablanca – Morocco is making bold strides in sustainable mobility by establishing itself as a player in the electric bike manufacturing industry. Pioneering this effort is Cloud Bike, a Moroccan start-up headquartered in the Tanger Free Zone (TFZ). The company, which initially focused exclusively on exports to Europe and North America, is now introducing its electric bikes to the domestic market, driven by rising fuel costs and growing interest in eco-friendly transportation.

“Made in Morocco”: A local success story

Cloud Bike’s flagship product, the Telus Bike, is the first electric bicycle entirely “Made in Morocco.” Since its founding in 2018, the company has specialized in producing electric bikes with a remarkable local integration rate of 65%. This includes Moroccan-made mechanical frames, wiring, and lithium batteries. The company aims to reach a 100% local integration rate in the near future.

The factory currently produces up to 50,000 bikes annually, offering models with ranges between 50 and 100 kilometers per charge. Fully charging the bikes’ lithium batteries takes just 4 to 5 hours at home, making them a practical and economical solution for daily commutes.

Affordability and sustainability

Although priced between  roughly $690 to $1,230, these bikes are gaining traction among Moroccan consumers as fuel prices continue to rise. Experts point out that the operational costs of electric bikes are significantly lower than traditional motorbikes, consuming only  $0.26 per 100 kilometers. Additionally, they require minimal maintenance, further enhancing their cost-effectiveness.

A broader vision: From Morocco to the world

Cloud Bike is also expanding its horizons beyond Morocco. The company has already begun exporting its bikes to several African countries, including Senegal, Gabon, and Mauritania, with plans to enter Guinea and the European market soon.

“We’re proud to contribute to Morocco’s energy transition by offering sustainable mobility solutions,” said Abdelrahman Farah, a company representative. He also noted that Cloud Bike has ventured into producing solar energy storage batteries, a field with rising demand, as Morocco continues its push toward renewable energy.

Transforming the market

The local market for electric bikes is poised for significant growth. Rising fuel prices and the government’s push for eco-friendly initiatives are making electric transportation more appealing. Cloud Bike, certified by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, has established a nationwide distribution network of 35 points of sale to make its products more accessible.

With Morocco’s leadership in renewable energy and its commitment to decarbonization, electric bikes are expected to become an essential part of the country’s sustainable transportation strategy. Through innovation and local manufacturing, Cloud Bike is helping put Morocco on the map as a hub for clean mobility solutions.
