Casablanca – Morocco continues to enhance its defense capabilities by expanding its fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) are reportedly in the process of acquiring the Chinese TB-001 drone, also known as the “Twin-Tailed Scorpion.” This advanced drone, developed by Sichuan Tengden Sci-Tech Innovation Co., Ltd., is expected to significantly strengthen Morocco’s aerial reconnaissance and strike capabilities.

A strategic move toward advanced UAV technology

Morocco has been actively modernizing its military through a diversified procurement strategy, integrating Turkish, American, and Chinese technologies into its arsenal. The TB-001 drone is seen as a crucial addition to this strategy, providing enhanced endurance, firepower, and operational flexibility.

According to military sources, the TB-001 is a twin-engine, twin-tailed UAV that offers long-range operational capabilities. With a wingspan of 18 meters, a length of 8.8 meters, and a height of 2.7 meters, this drone is built for high-performance missions. Its maximum takeoff weight of 1,950 kg allows for short-runway takeoff and efficient high-altitude flight.

Unmatched endurance and combat power

One of the TB-001’s key strengths is its remarkable endurance, with a continuous flight autonomy of up to 40 hours and a maximum operational range of 8,500 kilometers. This extended flight capability ensures that the drone can conduct long-range surveillance, intelligence gathering, and strike missions.

The drone is capable of carrying up to 1.5 tons of munitions, including:

  • Eight anti-tank missiles for precision strikes
  • AR-4 air-to-ground missiles for targeted assaults
  • 250 kg laser-guided bombs
  • FT-7 and FT-9 guided bombs
  • AR-3 FT-8D cruise missiles
  • FT-10 air-to-ground missiles
  • Lightweight munitions for engaging infantry and light vehicles

The TB-001’s versatile armament ensures it can perform a variety of combat roles, from attacking armored targets to providing air support for ground troops.

Versatility beyond combat

Beyond its combat capabilities, the TB-001 is designed for multi-role operations. The drone is capable of performing emergency rescue operations, meteorological monitoring, large-scale aerial patrols, and logistics transport. These additional functionalities make it a valuable asset not only for military engagements but also for humanitarian and security missions.

Advanced communication and control systems

The TB-001 features an advanced command and communication system, including Line-of-Sight (LOS) control up to 280 km and a satellite communication (Satcom) data link. This allows for remote control and command operations over distances of up to 3,000 km, enabling the drone to operate well beyond the reach of short-range air defense systems.

Morocco’s growing UAV fleet

The TB-001 is the latest addition to Morocco’s expanding drone fleet, following its interest in other Chinese UAVs, such as the Wing Loong X, after previously acquiring the Wing Loong I and II. In addition, the Moroccan military has been strengthening its UAV capabilities with Turkish drones, including the Bayraktar TB2, which it acquired in 2021, and the recently delivered Akıncı drones from Baykar.

A major leap in military strength

By acquiring the TB-001, Morocco reinforces its position as one of the leading nations in the region in terms of drone warfare and aerial surveillance. With its long endurance, powerful payload, and advanced operational capabilities, this drone will enhance Morocco’s ability to conduct high-precision military operations while strengthening its overall national security.

This acquisition underscores Morocco’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces through strategic partnerships with global defense manufacturers. As the country continues to invest in cutting-edge technology, its military capabilities are set to reach new heights, ensuring both defensive and strategic superiority in the region.
