Casablanca – In a milestone event for Moroccan-Chinese relations, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has resumed its direct flights between Casablanca and Beijing after a five-year pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first flight landed at Beijing Daxing International Airport on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in bilateral ties.

A historic arrival

The inaugural flight, carrying 291 passengers, departed from Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport and arrived in Beijing at 11:55 AM local time. Two hours later, the return flight to Morocco took off with 271 travelers aboard. This momentous occasion was celebrated with an official ceremony at Beijing Daxing Airport, attended by Morocco’s ambassador to China, Abdelkader El Ansari, journalists, and dignitaries from both nations.

Strengthening ties

Adil Khalloufi, RAM’s representative in China, highlighted the strategic importance of this direct route. “This flight is more than just a convenient travel option; it is a vital link fostering cultural and economic exchanges between our countries,” he stated. Khalloufi emphasized the service’s role in enhancing tourism and trade while fostering stronger cooperation between Morocco and China.

The resumption of flights is expected to further cement the growing ties between the two nations. Since Morocco waived visa requirements for Chinese citizens in 2016, Chinese tourism to Morocco has seen significant growth. The direct connection aims to build on this momentum.

Tourism and business opportunities

Khalloufi also highlighted Morocco’s appeal as a premier destination, mentioning the enchanting city of Marrakech and the breathtaking Moroccan Sahara. He noted that the direct flights offer new opportunities for business travelers, enabling easier access to both markets.

Kong Yue, Vice President of Beijing Daxing Airport, echoed these sentiments. “This route is the only direct air link between Beijing and Morocco, and its reopening revitalizes the international aviation market,” he said. Kong emphasized the flight’s role in facilitating political, economic, and cultural exchanges under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
