Casablanca– Last week, the National Agency for Regulating Activities Related to Cannabis convened in Fez, drawing various stakeholders to prepare for the upcoming second season of regulated cannabis production.

With 57 participants, including 13 conversion cooperatives and conversion experts, the meeting focused on training sessions covering certification processes and essential cultivation practices, emphasizing the journey from planting to harvesting. The goal is to ensure compliance with legal frameworks and facilitate the marketing and exportation of Moroccan cannabis products globally.

In parallel, regions known for cannabis cultivation are witnessing increased activity as they gear up for the farming season, slated to begin this month. The agency is actively involved in assisting farmers, particularly in legal matters, to ensure smooth operations.

Notably, in January, the Biouknat cooperative initiated Morocco’s first conversion operation for cannabis, marking a significant milestone in the country’s regulatory journey. Situated in the Bab Berred area of the Chefchaouen province, the cooperative’s production unit stands as the nation’s pioneer in harnessing cannabis for food and pharmaceutical purposes.

The cooperative’s collaboration with public and private partners underscores its commitment to building the first production unit dedicated to converting cannabis and extracting valuable materials such as cannabidiol and cannabinol, which find applications in various industries due to their proven therapeutic benefits.

Meanwhile, the National Agency for Regulating Cannabis, operating in the Taounate province, has been actively issuing licenses for cannabis-related activities, with 195 licenses granted until May 30 of the previous year. These licenses, distributed among 11 production cooperatives, signify a significant step towards legitimizing and regulating the sector.

Furthermore, the agency’s efforts align with Morocco’s broader objective, as outlined in Law No. 13-21, to establish a legal framework conducive to the sustainable development of medical and industrial applications of cannabis. By adhering to international commitments, Morocco seeks to attract investment and promote responsible practices while safeguarding national heritage and combating illegal trade.

As Morocco navigates this transformative journey, the focus remains on fostering a thriving and regulated cannabis industry that contributes positively to the economy while upholding legal standards and environmental sustainability.
