Casablanca – Morocco’s automotive market continued its rapid transformation during the first half of 2026, with electrified vehicles posting record growth and steadily increasing their share of new passenger car sales. The latest industry figures show that demand for hybrid and electric vehicles is expanding at a much faster pace than the overall market, reflecting changing consumer preferences, broader model availability, and the growing presence of Chinese manufacturers.

According to data released by the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM), sales of passenger vehicles equipped with electrified powertrains reached 19,611 units between January and the end of June 2026. This represents a 97.1% increase compared with the same period in 2025, making electrified vehicles one of the fastest-growing segments of Morocco’s automotive market.

The strong performance lifted the share of electrified vehicles to 16.8% of all new passenger car sales during the first six months of the year, up from less than 10% a year earlier. The figures include conventional hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrids, mild hybrids, battery electric vehicles, and range-extended electric vehicles.

Despite the rapid expansion of electrified models, diesel-powered vehicles remained the largest segment of Morocco’s passenger car market. However, their dominance continued to weaken as alternative powertrains gained ground. Diesel vehicles accounted for 64.62% of new passenger vehicle sales during the first half of 2026, down from 72.76% during the corresponding period of 2025.

Gasoline-powered vehicles also strengthened their position. Sales reached 21,711 units, compared with 17,097 units one year earlier, raising gasoline’s market share to 18.59%.

Among electrified vehicles, conventional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) remained the most popular choice for buyers. Sales totaled 7,748 units during the first half of the year, making them the largest electrified category by volume.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) ranked second with 6,090 registrations, but they delivered the strongest growth rate among all electrified technologies. Sales increased by 170.3% compared with the first half of 2025, allowing their share of Morocco’s passenger car market to rise from 2.3% to 5.2% within a year.

Mild hybrid vehicles (MHEVs) also continued to gain traction, recording 3,451 units sold during the six-month period.

Meanwhile, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) maintained strong momentum despite representing a smaller share of the overall market. Sales climbed 129.9% year over year to 1,060 units, indicating growing interest in fully electric mobility as charging infrastructure gradually expands and more models become available.

The first half of 2026 also marked the emergence of range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) in the Moroccan market. These vehicles operate primarily using an electric motor while employing a small internal combustion engine solely to recharge the battery and extend driving range. Sales of this category reached 1,262 units during the reporting period.

Industry data indicate that Chinese manufacturers have played a leading role in introducing this technology to Moroccan consumers, adding another option for buyers seeking electrified vehicles without the range limitations often associated with fully electric models.

The rapid expansion of electrified vehicle sales has coincided with the continued growth of Chinese automotive brands in Morocco.

According to AIVAM, 21 Chinese brands sold a combined 13,148 passenger vehicles during the first half of 2026. Their market share more than doubled to 11.3%, compared with 4.8% during the same period a year earlier.

In June 2026 alone, Chinese manufacturers sold 2,662 passenger vehicles, accounting for 10.8% of all passenger car sales recorded during the month.

The increasing presence of Chinese brands reflects their expanding product portfolios across multiple vehicle segments, particularly in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and range-extended models, where they have introduced a growing number of competitively priced vehicles.

The broader Moroccan automotive market also maintained solid growth throughout the first half of the year.

New vehicle sales reached 27,193 units in June 2026, representing a 16.72% increase compared with June 2025.

Between January and June, cumulative sales of new vehicles totaled 131,748 units, up from 112,026 units during the same period last year. This represents an increase of nearly 17.6%, indicating that demand remains strong across the market despite changing consumer preferences regarding vehicle technology.

The latest results build on the exceptional performance recorded in 2025, when Morocco registered 235,372 new vehicle sales, the highest annual volume on record and a 33.4% increase compared with 2024.

The continued expansion of Morocco’s automotive market comes as the country strengthens its position as one of Africa’s leading automotive manufacturing hubs. Global vehicle producers continue to expand production capacity in Morocco, while suppliers are increasing investments in components related to electrification, batteries, and advanced vehicle technologies.

Although vehicles powered by internal combustion engines still account for the majority of new registrations, the latest sales figures indicate that Morocco’s passenger car market is becoming increasingly diversified. Hybrid technologies now represent the largest share of electrified vehicle sales, while fully electric and range-extended models are gradually establishing a foothold as consumers gain access to a wider variety of products.

The combination of sustained growth in overall vehicle demand, expanding model availability, and the rapid rise of electrified powertrains suggests that Morocco’s automotive market is entering a new phase in which alternative propulsion technologies are becoming an increasingly important part of new vehicle sales.
