Casablanca – Cement sales in Morocco experienced a significant boost in 2024, marking a 9.45% increase compared to the previous year. The total cement deliveries reached 13,692,752 tons, up from 12,510,825 tons in 2023, according to data from the Moroccan Association of Cement Producers (APC Maroc). This rise is a clear indicator of the robust recovery in the construction sector, driven by large-scale infrastructure projects and growing real estate activities.

December 2024 alone saw a 15.19% year-on-year increase, with 1,292,743 tons of cement delivered compared to 1,122,290 tons in December 2023. This surge aligns with the steady demand for building materials, underscoring the dynamic growth within the industry.

The upward trend in cement sales is largely attributed to the Moroccan government’s commitment to advancing major infrastructure projects. These initiatives include the development of roads, ports, and public service buildings such as hospitals and schools. Such projects have been pivotal in stimulating the construction sector, creating job opportunities, and fostering economic growth.

The rise in cement consumption also reflects a revival in the self-construction sector, which had been subdued in previous years due to adverse weather conditions and economic challenges. The renewed vigor in this sector, combined with ongoing urban expansion, has further amplified the demand for cement.

Morocco’s construction sector contributes significantly to the national economy, accounting for over 5.5% of the GDP and more than 22% of the total added value in the secondary sector. The surge in cement sales signals a promising outlook for the industry, with expectations of sustained growth in the coming years.

Despite these gains, challenges remain. The high cost of land, rising prices of construction materials, and administrative hurdles in some urban agencies continue to pose obstacles. However, the government’s efforts to bolster infrastructure and support affordable housing initiatives are expected to mitigate these issues and sustain the sector’s momentum.

As Morocco continues to implement its ambitious infrastructure projects, the construction sector is poised for further expansion. The increased cement sales in 2024 underscore the sector’s critical role in the nation’s economic recovery and development, paving the way for a more robust and resilient construction industry in the future.
