Casablanca – ACWA Power has reinforced its investment footprint in Morocco through multiple agreements focused on renewable energy and battery storage systems, underscoring its commitment to the country’s energy transition. At the recent Future Investment Initiative (FII8) in Riyadh, ACWA Power signed a major agreement with Gotion Power Morocco to develop a 500 MW wind power plant equipped with a 2,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This project, valued at $800 million, will power Gotion’s electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in Morocco, set to begin production in the first half of 2026.

The strategic agreement marks a key milestone in Morocco’s energy development plans, positioning the country as a regional leader in clean energy solutions. The Gotion battery factory will be one of the largest of its kind, expected to support the creation of 17,000 jobs and contribute to the growing EV sector in Morocco. Khalid Qalam, recently appointed as the president of Gotion High-Tech’s Moroccan subsidiary, will lead the project. His extensive experience in the automotive industry aligns with Gotion’s vision to build an EV battery production hub in the region.

The FII8 in Riyadh also saw ACWA Power announce three additional agreements, totaling a combined $1.78 billion, aimed at advancing renewable energy, project financing, and research across several key regions. In addition to the Morocco project, ACWA Power is partnering with China’s Lujiazui Administration Bureau to establish a $54 million R&D center in Shanghai, which will develop cutting-edge technologies for solar, wind, energy storage, green hydrogen, and desalination.

These agreements reflect ACWA Power’s strategic approach to fostering partnerships and expanding into regions where clean energy demand is growing rapidly. CEO Marco Arcelli emphasized that these alliances strengthen ACWA Power’s commitment to providing affordable and reliable power globally, particularly as Morocco positions itself as a renewable energy leader in Africa. This collaboration is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to transition toward sustainable energy sources, facilitated by the strong support of both public and private sectors.

With these initiatives, ACWA Power continues to play a pivotal role in Morocco’s energy landscape, contributing significantly to the country’s industrial and environmental goals. Through its investments in renewable energy infrastructure, ACWA Power aims to support Morocco’s vision of becoming a central player in the green energy sector, which is critical for the region’s sustainable economic growth.
