Casablanca – Tangier is set to become a focal point for international football as its Grand Stadium reaches the final stages of modernization ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and in preparation for Morocco’s 2030 FIFA World Cup obligations. With a seating capacity of 75,500 and a host of state-of-the-art facilities, the stadium is emerging as one of Africa’s most advanced sports venues, while also reinforcing the city’s role as a hub for sports, tourism, and urban development.
The renovation of Tangier’s stadium, which involved extensive upgrades to meet FIFA standards, represents a total investment of approximately $36 million. The architectural design ranks the stadium among the most innovative in the world, second only to Brazil’s Maracanã Stadium, combining local construction expertise with technical support from international partners.
A key feature of the modernization is the complete conversion of the stadium for football purposes. The removal of the athletics track has brought spectators closer to the pitch, creating a more immersive match-day experience. The seating layout spans three tiers—lower, middle, and upper—while dedicated VIP and VVIP sections offer premium amenities. The VIP stand accommodates 1,300 spectators, with an additional VVIP section for 210 guests. A total of 142 private suites, each designed for 10 to 20 people, provide exclusive spaces for corporate and high-profile visitors.
The press facilities have also been significantly upgraded. The stadium now includes seating for 3,000 journalists, complete with commentary tables and dedicated work areas, alongside a mixed media zone covering more than 500 square meters and a conference room for 210 media representatives. These facilities ensure comprehensive media coverage for all events, meeting international broadcasting standards.
Players and teams benefit from four spacious locker rooms equipped with relaxation areas, massage and cryotherapy rooms, advanced warm-up zones, and dedicated spaces for coaches and technical staff. These facilities exceed minimum tournament requirements, allowing the stadium to host future high-level events beyond AFCON 2025.
Security has been significantly enhanced through the installation of 900 surveillance cameras integrated with facial recognition technology. The stadium also features two giant 220-square-meter screens, a 700-meter perimeter screen, and a top-tier sound system. Parking accommodates around 4,000 vehicles, including VIP and general sections, with additional spaces provided nearby. Accessibility for people with disabilities has been fully integrated across all levels through 12 elevators, covering VIP, press, and general seating areas.
Beyond its sporting function, the stadium is expected to have a transformative effect on Tangier’s urban and economic development. The venue is projected to attract visitors from across Africa and beyond, boosting tourism, local commerce, and hospitality services. Its presence strengthens Tangier’s image as a modern, internationally connected city capable of hosting major cultural and sporting events, complementing its role as a commercial and logistical hub.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, recently visited the stadium to inspect the final stages of the renovation, signaling Morocco’s readiness to host major international tournaments. The reopening is scheduled for October 2025, positioning Tangier’s stadium as a cornerstone of Morocco’s broader sports infrastructure strategy.
As Morocco continues to invest in world-class venues, Tangier’s Grand Stadium not only elevates the city’s profile but also underscores the country’s ambition to become a leading destination for international football, setting new standards in fan experience, media coverage, and operational excellence.
