Casablanca –  A substantial financial commitment exceeding $10.1 million has been designated to support the second phase of rehabilitating buildings at risk of collapse in Tangier’s historic medina, covering the period from 2024 to 2027.

This funding will primarily facilitate comprehensive studies and essential restoration efforts on 328 residential properties identified as critically endangered, based on surveys conducted by the National Agency for Urban Renewal and Rehabilitation of Buildings at Risk of Collapse (ANRUR).

In a recent announcement, the Tangier Municipality disclosed the contribution of approximately $3.72 million towards this crucial rehabilitation program. This commitment underscores the municipality’s proactive stance in preserving the architectural heritage and ensuring public safety within the city’s historic core.

The total cost of the program will be precisely determined upon the completion of detailed studies and subsequent tender processes, ensuring strict adherence to the allocated financial envelope.

In addition to the Tangier Municipality’s contribution, financial backing is expected from key stakeholders including the Ministry of National Planning, Urban Planning, Housing, and City Policy, pledging approximately $3.74 million, and the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council, committing approximately $3.71 million.

This comprehensive initiative underscores a collaborative effort involving regional authorities, including the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council, the Economic and Social Development Agency for the Northern Prefectures and Provinces (APDN), and the ANRUR, all united in their commitment to safeguarding Tangier’s historic architectural legacy. The partnership agreement, endorsed during a recent ordinary session, solidifies the collective dedication towards the preservation and revitalization of Tangier’s heritage.

The first phase of the Tangier rehabilitation program was launched last year with a financial envelope of $5.15 million.
