Casablanca – The trade relations between Morocco and Italy are thriving, as emphasized by Italian Ambassador Armando Barucco during the 16th edition of the International Agriculture Show in Morocco (SIAM) held from April 22 to 28. Ambassador Barucco, a keen admirer of Meknes, underscored the significance and robustness of the bilateral relations between the two countries, expressing optimism for the future.

Italy’s substantial presence at SIAM included over 15 Italian exhibitors showcasing advanced technology and expertise in the agri-food industry. Ambassador Barucco highlighted the active collaboration between Italy and Morocco in this sector, which has contributed significantly to developments in Morocco’s agricultural landscape.

Morocco is currently transitioning from an agricultural to an industrial economy, akin to Italy’s experience in the 1950s. Italy has effectively maintained its agricultural heritage while evolving into an industrial powerhouse. Morocco’s advancements in the automotive sector, with investments from Italian firms in regions like Tangier, Kenitra, and Casablanca, symbolize this economic shift. The increasing export of automobiles from Morocco to Europe underscores its competitiveness and agricultural capabilities.

Italy has made substantial investments in Moroccan agriculture and supplies advanced machinery tailored to local needs. Italy ranks as the second-largest supplier of agricultural machinery to Morocco, highlighting its strong commitment to this vital market.

Ambassador Barucco envisions continued growth in collaboration and trade between Morocco and Italy. Italy stands as one of Morocco’s top trade partners within the EU and globally, reflecting strong and consolidated partnerships. Trade between the two countries increased by 30% between 2021 and 2022, with further growth anticipated in the future. The integration of the two economies will promote increased exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Rome ranks among Rabat’s top ten trading partners, with 200 Italian companies operating in various sectors across the Kingdom.

According to the Italian government’s portal dedicated to foreign markets (infomercatiesteri.it), Morocco is considered a strategic country for Italy in the Mediterranean region due to its political stability and positive economic growth prospects, distinguishing it in the region.

The portal highlights Morocco’s attributes including a growing market, political, economic, and social stability, strong macroeconomic commitment, openness to global trade, infrastructure compliant with international standards, and significant investment opportunities.

On the energy front, Rabat is an important partner for Rome in sustainable development, with Morocco having developed one of the most ambitious energy transition strategies on the African continent. The Kingdom has become a key destination for research and sustainability of energy operations, particularly in the green hydrogen sector.
