Casablanca – Agadir, Morocco, has strengthened its international connectivity with the launch of a new direct air route linking the coastal city to Amsterdam, one of Europe’s busiest hubs. The inaugural flight, operated by Transavia, a low-cost carrier subsidiary of the Air France-KLM group, landed at Agadir Al Massira Airport on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s tourism and air connectivity.
The flight, carrying 176 passengers, was met with a celebratory reception at Agadir’s airport, attended by officials from the Souss Massa Regional Council and the Agadir Souss Massa Regional Tourism Council. The new route is part of a strategic partnership between these local authorities and Transavia, aimed at enhancing the region’s air links with the Netherlands—a key European market for Moroccan tourism. With this new connection, Agadir hopes to attract more Dutch visitors and further solidify its position as a prime destination in Morocco’s growing tourism sector.
This direct link to Amsterdam comes at a crucial time for Agadir’s tourism, as the region has seen significant growth in recent years. In 2024, Agadir Al Massira Airport welcomed over 3.1 million passengers, a 36% increase compared to 2023. This increase reflects the city’s growing appeal as a tourist destination, thanks in part to its expanding network of over 30 international routes, as well as strong domestic connections to major cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier.
The new route is expected to further boost the local economy by facilitating travel for tourists, investors, and businesspeople between Agadir and Amsterdam. Moreover, it aligns with Morocco’s broader tourism strategy, which aims to diversify and expand the country’s tourism base by connecting it more closely with key European markets.
Agadir’s infrastructure is also set to improve to accommodate the growing number of travelers. In line with the “Airports 2030” initiative, which is part of the national effort to modernize airport facilities in anticipation of hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Agadir Al Massira Airport will undergo an expansion project. This will improve the airport’s capacity and services, ensuring it remains a competitive and efficient hub for international travelers.
The new flight between Agadir and Amsterdam is just one part of a broader effort to enhance Morocco’s aviation sector. As the country seeks to position itself as a leading aviation hub in Africa, the introduction of new routes such as this one is a vital step toward achieving that goal. The Moroccan government and the National Airports Authority (ONDA) are committed to creating world-class travel infrastructure that will accommodate the anticipated increase in international visitors.
The Agadir-Amsterdam route is expected to become a key component of the region’s tourism strategy, offering a direct and convenient connection between the Dutch capital and Morocco’s sunny southern coast. In addition to its tourist appeal, Agadir also boasts a vibrant economy supported by industries such as agriculture, fishing, and trade, making it an increasingly important player in both Morocco’s domestic and international business landscape.
With the successful launch of the Agadir-Amsterdam air route, both the tourism and aviation sectors in the Souss Massa region are poised for continued growth, contributing to the long-term economic development of Morocco. As air connectivity continues to improve, Agadir looks set to become an even more attractive destination for international visitors and investors alike.
