Casablanca– The National Railway Office of Morocco (ONCF) has unveiled its annual report, outlining the progress made in passenger and freight transport operations throughout 2023. With a steadfast focus on sustainability, the office’s endeavors have not only fueled substantial growth but have also established a standard for eco-conscious transportation systems. According to the report, the National Railway Office recorded approximately 52.8 million passengers by the close of 2023, marking a notable 15 percent increase compared to the previous year.

A standout feature of the report is the ongoing success of the Al-Buraq train, commemorating its fifth anniversary in 2023. Serving as a hallmark of sustainable mobility, the Al-Buraq train transported over 5 million passengers during the year, marking an impressive 24 percent surge from 2022. This accomplishment contributed to transactions totaling approximately 2.55 billion Dirhams (equivalent to approximately $263 million USD), reflecting a 17 percent increase from the preceding year.

Moreover, freight transport operations exhibited exceptional performance, particularly in the conveyance of automobiles and containers. The volume of transported cars surged by 20 percent compared to 2022, while container transport from the Tangier Mediterranean Port to the  port in Casablanca doubled during the same timeframe.

Despite encountering formidable global challenges, the National Railway Office demonstrated resilience, achieving transactions valued at 4.88 billion Dirhams (approximately $504 million USD) in 2023, reflecting a 6 percent upswing from the prior year. Additionally, the office showcased prudent financial management, with indebtedness declining by 3 percent to 43.9 billion Dirhams (approximately $4.53 billion USD) by the end of 2023.

In line with its sustainability commitment, the National Railway Office unveiled plans to operate 90 percent of its electric trains using green energy commencing in 2024. This strategic initiative aims to significantly curtail energy consumption and carbon emissions, further solidifying the office’s position as a trailblazer in sustainable mobility.
