Casablanca – Morocco has reached a historic milestone in its avocado export sector, doubling shipments to Germany during the 2024/25 season and establishing itself as one of the leading global suppliers of the fruit. According to trade data and industry reports from EastFruit, the Kingdom exported approximately 19,600 tons of avocados to Germany between November 2024 and August 2025, valued at nearly $80 million. This performance represents twice the volume of the previous season and six times the exports recorded in the 2021/22 season, marking a new record for Moroccan avocado exports.

Morocco climbs the rankings

The surge in exports has propelled Morocco to third place among avocado suppliers to Germany, behind Peru and South Africa. Germany, one of Morocco’s top five fruit export destinations, accounted for more than 13% of total Moroccan avocado exports during the first ten months of the 2024/25 season. Morocco had previously ranked fifth in the 2022/23 season, before a temporary drop to eighth place in 2023/24. The strong recovery this season demonstrates the growing strength and resilience of the Moroccan avocado sector.

Growing German demand

The increase in Moroccan exports is being driven by rising consumer demand in Germany, as avocados become an increasingly popular part of local diets. Over the past two seasons, Germany imported avocados from 26 countries, and this number has expanded to 30 in the current season, reflecting the diversification of supply sources. Among these, 12 countries shipped more than 1,000 tons each. Peru remains the dominant supplier from May to October, while South Africa competes strongly in the same period. Chile covers most shipments in November and December, and Morocco supplies the bulk of demand between January and March.

Moroccan avocado sector gains global recognition

The record export volumes reflect Morocco’s growing reputation in the international fruit market. Avocado is now among the country’s most significant fruit exports, second only to mandarins in terms of volume. The sector has demonstrated the ability to meet strict European market standards, including quality, consistency, and logistical efficiency. Moroccan exporters have also recorded unprecedented growth in Switzerland and Canada, illustrating the increasing international reach and competitiveness of the sector.

Industry experts attribute Morocco’s success to several factors. First, production has expanded significantly in recent years, with improved cultivation practices and better farm management. Second, exporters have increasingly invested in modern logistics and cold chain infrastructure, ensuring that fruit arrives in optimal condition. Third, Moroccan avocado pricing has remained competitive, allowing the country to maintain a strong foothold in international markets despite global competition.

Strategic implications

The growth of the Moroccan avocado sector highlights a broader trend in the country’s agricultural export strategy: targeting high-value markets, diversifying export destinations, and leveraging quality as a competitive advantage. Germany, one of the largest and most quality-conscious European markets, has become a strategic platform for Moroccan avocado producers. By securing a top position in this market, Morocco is reinforcing its position as a reliable supplier of tropical and high-quality fruits in Europe.

Outlook for the 2024/25 season and beyond

With several months remaining in the current season, Morocco is expected to maintain or further strengthen its position among top exporters to Germany. The consistent growth also signals potential for expansion in other international markets, as Swiss and Canadian data already show strong performance.

Morocco’s avocado sector demonstrates a well-structured and competitive supply chain, capable of facing challenges from major global producers in South America and Africa. The country’s continued success in this sector not only boosts export revenues but also enhances the reputation of Moroccan agriculture on a global scale.

As demand for avocados continues to rise across Europe and North America, Morocco is well-positioned to consolidate its gains, expand production further, and capture a larger share of the high-value avocado market.
