Casablanca – January 21, 2025 – Leoni AG, a global leader in wiring systems for the automotive industry, has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility in Agadir, Morocco, further expanding its footprint in the country. This new plant is specifically designed to meet the growing demands of the commercial vehicle sector, producing complex wiring systems tailored for trucks, powertrains, and off-road vehicles.
The investment, amounting to $23.7 million, underscores Leoni’s commitment to the Moroccan market and the wider automotive industry. The new facility, located in the Agadir Industrial Acceleration Zone (ZAI), will play a key role in the company’s growth strategy for the commercial vehicle segment, with the goal of outpacing the market’s expansion in the coming years.
Ingo Spengler, COO of Leoni AG, emphasized the importance of this move, stating, “Our goal is to grow faster than the market in the commercial vehicle segment. The opening of this plant in Agadir demonstrates our commitment to strengthening our competitiveness in this sector.” Leoni’s decision to invest in this region highlights its understanding of the automotive industry’s evolving needs and its ability to provide advanced solutions for both commercial and off-road vehicles.
A strategic location for growth
Agadir’s strategic location, near several commercial vehicle manufacturers, is a major advantage for Leoni. Fakhri Bouguerra, Managing Director of Leoni Morocco, noted, “The region offers a skilled workforce and ample space for future expansion, making it an ideal location for our new facility.” The plant will generate over 3,000 new jobs by 2027, creating significant opportunities for local communities and contributing to the regional economy.
The Agadir facility is designed to produce wiring systems for commercial vehicles in relatively small batch sizes with high complexity – a characteristic feature of the sector. The plant will employ digitalized and networked processes that adhere to strict standards, ensuring efficiency and operational excellence. Leoni has also prioritized sustainability, integrating energy-efficient technologies to minimize the plant’s environmental impact and align with Morocco’s national sustainability goals.
A commitment to sustainability and digitalization
Leoni’s investment in Agadir is also a step toward its broader goal of fostering sustainability and digital transformation across its operations. The company is setting new benchmarks for smart, automated processes within its global production network. As Spengler explained, “Agadir is a flagship project for Leoni, showcasing best practices in digitalization and automation that will enhance our operational capabilities globally.”
In addition to creating new jobs, Leoni’s investment in Agadir will benefit the local community through regional development projects, particularly educational programs aimed at nurturing the next generation of skilled workers in the region.
Supporting the national automotive sector
The opening of this new facility is a significant part of Leoni’s broader strategy to contribute to Morocco’s growing automotive sector. With the opening of this plant and the expansion of other facilities in the Casablanca-Settat region, the company expects to create more than 7,000 new job opportunities across the Kingdom by 2027. These projects are expected to have a transformative impact on the local economy and the national industrial landscape, particularly in the commercial vehicle segment.
As Leoni continues to expand its operations in Morocco, its investments are set to further enhance the country’s position as a key player in the global automotive supply chain, reinforcing its status as a strategic hub for the automotive industry.
