Casablanca – Li Changlin, the Chinese ambassador to Morocco, has lauded the kingdom’s progress in its high-speed rail projects, emphasizing the ambitious plans to extend the network to 1,500 kilometers by 2035. His remarks underscore the robust partnership between Morocco and China in advancing transportation infrastructure.
In a recent article published in the official People’s Daily newspaper, Li Changlin expressed his admiration for the rapid development of Morocco’s high-speed rail network, particularly highlighting the Tangier-Casablanca line. He described this project as a “notable achievement” that showcases Morocco’s commitment to technological advancement and modern infrastructure.
“The Tangier-Casablanca high-speed rail line is a testament to the country’s pursuit of cutting-edge transportation solutions,” said the ambassador. He noted that the project has not only enhanced the quality of transport in Morocco but also played a significant role in boosting tourism and attracting foreign investment.
Milestones and passenger growth
Li revealed that since its launch, the high-speed rail project has seen substantial growth in passenger numbers. In 2024, the number of passengers reached 5.5 million, with projections to hit 6 million by 2025. This growth reflects the success and increasing demand for efficient and modern transportation in Morocco.
Bilateral cooperation and technological exchange
The ambassador emphasized the strong collaboration between Morocco and China, which began with a memorandum of understanding signed in 2016. This agreement, involving the Chinese Railway Company and the Moroccan National Railway Office, covers technology transfer, workforce training, and joint investments.
Chinese companies like “HydroChina 5” and “China Overseas Engineering Group” have been instrumental in the development of the Tangier-Kenitra high-speed line. Their involvement has brought significant expertise and innovation to Morocco’s railway projects.
Future projects and strategic goals
Under the directives of King Mohammed VI, Morocco is accelerating its infrastructure projects to prepare for the 2030 World Cup. One of the key projects is the 430-kilometer Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed line, expected to be completed by 2029. The ambassador highlighted that Chinese and German companies have secured contracts worth $1.3 billion to supply essential materials for this project.
Li also mentioned the construction of a 2,814-meter double-track railway tunnel in Rabat, a project awarded to “HydroChina 5,” and the design of the Marrakech-Agadir high-speed line by “China Railway Design Corporation (CRDC).” These projects reflect the deepening cooperation and shared vision for future development.
Strategic partnership and future prospects
The ambassador concluded by affirming the strategic partnership between China and Morocco, emphasizing the trust Morocco places in Chinese companies’ capabilities. He expressed confidence that this partnership will continue to thrive, providing new opportunities for further collaboration in rail infrastructure, project financing, and technology sharing.
“The continued selection of Chinese companies for these major projects is a testament to the strong and effective cooperation between our nations,” Li said. “China remains committed to supporting Morocco in achieving its developmental goals and hosting international events like the World Cup.”
This ongoing partnership not only bolsters Morocco’s infrastructure but also strengthens the economic and technological ties between the two countries, paving the way for a prosperous future in the realm of high-speed rail transportation.
